Here are a few of your options when receiving eyelash extensions.

Curl

Lashes are available in various degrees of curls. The most common curls are J, B, C and D curl.

J – subtle  B – lash lift  C – strong  D – dramatic  L – vertical lift

Lashes with a stronger curl have more impact from a frontal viewpoint and appear longer than a straighter curl in the same length.

Length

Lashes are available in a variety of lengths:

Short             6mm to 8mm

Medium        9mm to 12mm

Long             13mm to 14mm

Extra long   15mm and above

Most salons would usually stock 8mm – 14mm in their inventory; 9mm – 12mm are the most popular sizes.

Longer is not always better, using lashes 14mm or longer are not always ideal unless you already have strong, long natural lashes to begin with.

 

Volume

Fuller looks can be achieved by applying more lashes. More lashes can also mean better longevity.

Classic lash extensions – 60 to100 lashes per eye

Volume lash extensions – 300 to 600+ lashes per eye

A fuller set requires more time to apply more lashes.

Thickness

Lashes are available in a variety of thicknesses:

0.07mm, 0.10mm, 0.12mm, 0.15mm, 0.18mm, 0.20mm, 0.23mm,  0.25mm and 0.30mm

Classic lash extensions (1D) – 0.15mm, 0.18mm and 0.20mm

Volume lash extensions (2D) – 0.07mm, 0.10mm and 0.12mm

Volume lash extensions (3D) – 0.07mm and 0.10mm

Volume lash extensions (4D+) – 0.07mm

Thicknesses of 0.20mm or above are being phased out in the lash industry worldwide because they are too heavy for most natural lashes to support.

Frequently asked questions about eyelash extensions:

Is it true that eyelash extensions can damage my natural lashes?

To be completely honest it is not a simple yes or no answer. It depends on the application, the lashes used and how one follows the aftercare advice given by the stylist. Eyelash extensions will not damage your natural lashes if applied correctly. There are two important facts that you should be aware of before you decide which lashes are best for you.

 

Long, thicker extensions are not always the best – The extensions used should be slightly longer and thicker than your natural eyelashes. Most of those who have experienced damaged lashes have had the wrong type of lashes applied by an uneducated stylist. Excess weight and length can cause stress on the natural lashes and result in the natural lashes breaking or prematurely shedding.

 

One extension should bond to one natural eyelash only –  An experienced stylist would fully isolate a natural lash and adhere only one extension to that natural eyelash (Classic lash extensions). This method allows your natural lashes to grow and shed freely and not be restricted by being stuck to other lashes. Allergic reaction to product and damage to eyelashes are caused by incorrect application and can result in itching, pinching and massive clumping. To relieve any discomfort, the client would likely pick or pull out the offending extensions resulting in damaged natural lashes or even worse bald eyes.

Is it true I can’t ever get my extensions wet otherwise they will fall out?

It is ok to get your lashes wet, and we recommend you cleanse them daily. If your stylist nebulises your lashes (spraying them with fine mist post treatment) the adhesive will be cured immediately so you can exercise, swim or go to the gym as soon as you leave your appointment. If your stylist doesn’t nebulise your lashes, then your adhesive will take up to 48 hours to cure, so  avoid getting your lashes wet before then.

Is it true if I touch my lashes, that they will fall out quicker?

It is ok to gently brush them if required, but not to pull on them or play with them as you may pull out your natural eyelashes. If your lashes were applied correctly and looked after well, they should keep until the end of the natural lash cycle. You should wash your lashes every evening to keep your eyes clean and healthy.

 

Is it true that I cannot wear mascara with my extensions?

The whole point of getting extensions is that you wouldn’t need to wear mascara, however it is entirely your choice whether or not you wish to wear water based mascara on top of your extensions. If you think your extensions aren’t looking full enough ask for more lashes to be applied instead. Removing residue from lashes when receiving an infill can incur an extra charge as it is a cumbersome procedure cleaning the mascara from the lashes and also time consuming.

 

A lash stylist would rather spend the appointment time applying lashes than cleaning makeup from the existing ones. If you decided you do not want to maintain your lashes and wish to let them shed completely with your natural lash cycle, you may apply mascara to blend the remaining extensions until they have completely shed. Only use water based mascara.

THE TRUTH ABOUT  Eyelash Extensions

The main ingredient in eyelash adhesives is cyanoacrylate, which is the same ingredient used in surgical adhesives. Cyanoacrylate is also commonly used in household, medical and industrial adhesives. Despite what some companies may claim, it is a fact that currently no eyelash adhesives are hypoallergenic or FDA approved.

Eyelash extensions are applied onto the natural eyelash approximately 1mm away from the skin.

Adhesive should never make contact with the skin. We usually take out between 1 to 2 drops of adhesive per client, and we only use 1/10 of each drop! So when extensions are applied correctly, they should be seamless and NEVER EVER should you see clumps of glue ANYWHERE, not even a tiny amount!
